Holidaze
Last night I wrapped (and boxed and bagged) the presents I have for my parents, as they are due in town tonight. I didn't get much cleaning done, but it looks like I'm going to have a bit of time tonight before they arrive. Bully for that.
The weekend is going to be rather hectic. The parents get here tonight. I don't know what we're doing tomorrow, but we're going out for dinner tomorrow night with Andrea and her mom. (Yes, parents are meeting. Worlds are colliding. Watch out.) Sunday is their 40th anniversary, so I suppose we'll go for dinner again or something. It's also Andrea's niece's 3rd birthday party. My parents leave on Monday morning, so sometime along the way we'll have to exchange presents.
Monday evening we have to go to Andrea's dad's, and Tuesday (Christmas day) is pretty much entirely given over to her mom's family. And then we go back to work.
Hmm, I wonder if Allie is ready to see Cindy (my parents' dog) again. She did surprisingly well last time, but dogs put her on high alert. She's come a long way, though--she used to go upstairs and hide behind the bookshelf if anyone besides me was in the house. Now she'll cautiously make her way around the house even with a few extra people and a dog around.
And then there's this:
Key Setbacks Dim Luster of Democrats' Year (Washington Post): "The first Democratic-led Congress in a dozen years limped out of Washington with a lengthy list of accomplishments, from the first increase in fuel-efficiency standards in a generation to the first minimum-wage hike in a decade. But Democrats' failure to address the central issues that swept them to power left even the most partisan of them dissatisfied and Congress mired at a historic low in public esteem."
Record-Breaking Obstruction: How It Screwed You (Campaign for America's Future): "What have conservatives obstructed this year? Here's just a partial list."
Top Ten Ethics Scandals of 2007 (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington)
Big Table Fantasies (Paul Krugman, New York Times): "There are large differences among the candidates in their beliefs about what it will take to turn a progressive agenda into reality."
Mike Huckabee: Playing Both Sides of the Pulpit (David Corn, Mother Jones): "The candidate says he wants to unite the country. But in a 1998 book, Huckabee was a fierce culture warrior, equating environmentalism with pornography, homosexuality with necrophilia, and nonbelievers with evildoers."
The Spears and the Huckabees: Parenting on Parade (Sam Smith, Scholars & Rogues)
Kit Bond Tries To Backpedal From Waterboarding Comments (Crooks and Liars)
DVDs: "It's A Wonderful Life," Again? (Huffington Post): "Why do so many movies keep coming out in 'new' editions, versions that use any anniversary as an excuse to repackage a film that came out years ago?"
